Our top pick: Alesis Recital Play 88-Key Keyboard Bundle.
How each alternative compares
Donner 88-Key Velocity-Sensitive Digital Piano
The Donner DEK-80 uses velocity-sensitive keys rather than the touch-sensitive action found on the Alesis Recital Play. This distinction matters for dynamic control, as velocity responds to strike force while touch sensitivity adjusts volume based on key depth. The Donner is slightly wider at 51.6 inches compared to the Alesis 49.9-inch length, but it remains a compact portable option. It lacks built-in speakers and a large sound library, offering only USB-MIDI connectivity. You should choose this model if you prioritize computer integration and a lower price point over the Alesis included accessories and onboard audio capabilities.
Ktaxon 88-Key Semi-Weighted Digital Piano
This Ktaxon model features semi-weighted keys, providing a different physical resistance than the touch-sensitive keys on the Alesis Recital Play. Semi-weighted actions offer a middle ground between the light feel of synth-action and the heavy resistance of fully weighted keys. The Alesis includes a full accessory bundle with a stand, pedal, and headphones, whereas this Ktaxon unit is sold as a standalone keyboard. It supports wireless connectivity for app-based learning, a feature the Alesis lacks. Pick this piano if you value wireless app support and a semi-weighted feel, but be prepared to purchase accessories separately.
OYAYO 88-Key Folding Semi-Weighted Keyboard
The OYAYO FP88D distinguishes itself with a folding form factor, making it significantly more portable than the rigid Alesis Recital Play. It offers weighted, semi-weighted, and velocity-sensitive modes, giving you more control over key resistance than the single touch-sensitive action of the Alesis. This model includes Bluetooth connectivity for wireless audio and app pairing, which the Alesis does not support. It also features a rechargeable battery, allowing practice without a power outlet. Choose this option if travel and wireless connectivity are your top priorities, even if it means sacrificing the included stand and headphones of the Alesis bundle.
Rhymo 88-Key Folding Semi-Weighted Keyboard
The Rhymo keyboard shares the folding design of the OYAYO, offering superior portability compared to the standard Alesis Recital Play. It features weighted, semi-weighted, and velocity-sensitive key actions, providing more tactile variety than the Alesis touch-sensitive keys. The Rhymo includes Bluetooth connectivity and an LCD screen for interface navigation, features absent on the Alesis. Weighing only 7.72 pounds, it is lighter than the Alesis at 12.1 pounds. This model suits travelers who need app connectivity and a compact footprint. You should consider this alternative if you prioritize wireless features and lightweight design over the comprehensive accessory package included with the Alesis.
Ktaxon 88-Key Semi-Weighted Digital Piano
This Ktaxon unit offers weighted and semi-weighted key actions, contrasting with the touch-sensitive keys on the Alesis Recital Play. Weighted keys provide a heavier resistance that mimics acoustic pianos more closely than the Alesis action. The Alesis includes a full accessory bundle, while this Ktaxon model focuses on the keyboard itself with wireless app support. It lacks the extensive preset sound library of the Alesis, which offers 480 sounds. Select this piano if you prefer a weighted key feel and wireless connectivity for learning apps. It is a practical choice for beginners who value key resistance over the included stand and audio features of the Alesis.
NOVATAGE 88-Key Semi-Weighted Digital Piano
The NOVATAGE S-ADPO-LD provides weighted and semi-weighted key actions, differing from the touch-sensitive keys on the Alesis Recital Play. This action offers greater resistance, closer to an acoustic piano feel. The NOVATAGE includes a sustain pedal and is designed for MIDI connectivity, similar to the Alesis USB-MIDI connection. However, it lacks the built-in speakers and extensive sound library of the Alesis. The NOVATAGE features a wood grain aesthetic, offering a different visual style. Choose this model if you want a MIDI-ready instrument with weighted keys and a specific aesthetic. You will need to source your own stand and headphones, unlike the complete bundle offered by the Alesis.
