Who it fits
Good fit for
This keyboard suits beginners who want to learn with visual aids from the light-up keys while needing a full 88-key layout. It also fits musicians who travel frequently or have limited storage space, as the folding mechanism and 12-pound weight make it highly portable. Students practicing with learning apps will appreciate the MIDI and USB connectivity, allowing them to connect to software easily. The inclusion of a sustain pedal and headphone jack supports quiet, focused practice at home or on the go.
Who should skip it
You should look elsewhere if you require a traditional hammer-action keyboard with graded weights, as this model uses semi-weighted keys that offer less resistance and realism. Professional performers needing high-fidelity stereo speakers or extensive sound libraries may find the built-in speakers and 128 tones insufficient. Additionally, if you prefer a rigid, stationary instrument for a dedicated home studio setup, the folding joints and plastic construction may not provide the stability or durability you expect from a fixed digital piano.
Verdict: The BESFAN ASP-20AU is a practical choice for portable practice and beginner learning thanks to its folding design and light-up keys. It offers a full 88-key range in a compact package, though it lacks the weighted action of higher-end stage pianos.
BESFAN Key Specs Explained
Number of Keys: 88
This keyboard includes a full set of 88 keys, matching the range of an acoustic piano. You get access to the entire musical spectrum, from low bass notes to high treble. This specification is essential if you plan to learn standard piano repertoire or require the complete range for composition. It distinguishes this model from smaller 61-key portable keyboards that limit your musical options.
Key Action: Semi-weighted
The keys offer a balance of resistance and responsiveness, simulating the feel of an acoustic piano without the heavy weight of a fully weighted hammer action. This design supports developing proper finger technique while remaining comfortable for long practice sessions. It is ideal for beginners who need realistic feedback but prioritize portability and ease of play over the strict resistance of professional stage pianos.
Form Factor: Foldable
The instrument features a folding design that allows you to collapse the keyboard for compact storage and transport. You can reduce its footprint quickly, making it convenient for travel or small living spaces. This specification is crucial for musicians who need a portable instrument that fits in a car or backpack. It offers flexibility that rigid, fixed-frame keyboards cannot provide for on-the-go performance.
Preset Tones: 128
This keyboard includes 128 built-in sounds, covering various instruments like pianos, strings, and synths. You can explore different timbres without needing external sound modules or software. This variety supports creative experimentation and practice across multiple genres. When comparing digital pianos, this count indicates the instrument's versatility for composition and casual playing, offering more sonic options than basic piano-only models.
Connectivity: MIDI, USB
The keyboard connects to computers or tablets via USB for MIDI data transfer. You can link it to learning apps or music software to expand your practice and composition capabilities. This specification ensures compatibility with modern digital workflows, allowing you to record performances or use virtual instruments. It is a standard feature for musicians who integrate hardware keyboards with software-based music production environments.
