How to Choose a Roland Digital Piano
-
Check the key action type
Key action defines how the keys feel under your fingers. Most models on this list use standard weighted actions. The Roland FP-90X stands out with PHA-50 hybrid keys that combine wood and plastic for a more authentic acoustic feel. If you prioritize realistic resistance, this spec matters most. The Roland RD-08 uses PHA-4 action for solid weighted performance. Beginners often start with standard weighted keys, while advanced players may seek hybrid mechanisms for better touch sensitivity and dynamic control during practice sessions.
-
Compare the total weight
Weight determines how easily you can move the instrument. The Roland GO-88PX is the lightest option at 12.7 pounds, making it ideal for frequent travel or small apartments. The FP-10 weighs 27.8 pounds, offering a balance between portability and stability. The FP-40 is heavier at 45.4 pounds, suggesting it is less suited for frequent relocation. Check the weight spec if you plan to carry your piano to lessons or gigs. Lighter models fit into car trunks more easily, while heavier units often provide a more grounded feel during intense playing sessions.
-
Review the included accessories
Bundles vary significantly in what they provide. The FP-E50 and FP-60X bundles include adjustable stands, which saves you from buying separate furniture. The FP-10 and FP-40 bundles focus on essential starter accessories like sustain pedals. The RD-08 bundle includes a bench and headphones, creating a complete ready-to-play setup. Always check the bundle size description. If you need a stand or bench, selecting a bundle that includes them simplifies your initial setup and reduces the number of additional purchases required for your home practice space.
-
Consider the form factor
Form factor affects both placement and usage. Stage pianos like the RD-08 are designed for live performance with dedicated sound controls. Home digital pianos like the FP-10 and FP-40 focus on acoustic simulation and home practice. The GO-88PX is labeled as a portable digital piano, emphasizing mobility. Choose a stage piano if you need robust connectivity for external gear. Select a home digital piano for a more traditional playing experience. The form factor dictates how the instrument integrates into your specific musical environment and workflow.
-
Look for specific color options
Color is a cosmetic choice that may affect availability. The FP-60X is explicitly listed in a white finish, which suits players who prefer lighter aesthetics for their home studio. Most other models, including the FP-10, FP-40, and RD-08, are black. If you have a specific decor scheme, check the color spec carefully. The white finish option is limited to the FP-60X bundle. This choice does not impact sound quality or key action but helps the instrument blend seamlessly with your existing room design and furniture arrangement.
