This novation flkey 2 37 USB review covers a compact MIDI controller tailored for FL Studio production. The unit functions as an integrated hardware interface for your digital audio workstation. Two core specifications define this hardware: its 37 synth-action mini-keys and direct USB MIDI connectivity. It measures 21.9 inches wide by 9.88 inches long and weighs 4.81 pounds. Alongside the keybed, you get sixteen velocity-sensitive pads, eight assignable knobs, and pitch and modulation touch strips. These physical controls let you navigate channels, automate mixer levels, and program drum sequences directly.
What stands out

- Eight assignable rotary knobs for mixer level adjustments and effect automation
- Integrated Scale and Chord modes paired with a built-in arpeggiator
- Pitch and modulation touch strips providing expressive control
Who it fits
Good fit for
This controller suits FL Studio users who need compact hardware for desktop music production. If you produce beats using the Channel Rack, FPC, or Slicex, the 16 velocity-sensitive pads fit your step-sequencing workflow. The 37 synth-action mini-keys accommodate two-handed chord playing while keeping width at 21.9 inches. Producers who travel or maintain tight workspaces will benefit from the 4.81-pound weight and direct USB MIDI connection.
Who should skip it
Skip this keyboard if you want full-sized, weighted piano keys. The 37 mini-keys feature synth action rather than hammer action, making them unsuitable for classical piano repertoire. You should also look elsewhere if you prefer physical pitch and modulation wheels instead of touch strips. In addition, producers who work outside of FL Studio will not benefit from the dedicated Channel Rack controls.
Verdict: The Novation FLkey 37 provides tight FL Studio integration with 37 mini-keys, 16 pads, and eight knobs in a lightweight four-pound frame. It is a capable production tool for FL Studio beatmakers who prioritize compact controls over full-sized keys.
Novation FLkey 37 Key Specs
Number of Keys: 37
This controller offers 37 keys, providing a compact layout that fits easily on smaller desks or production stations. You get enough range for basic melodies and basslines without the bulk of a full-size piano. This size is ideal for travelers or those with limited workspace. When comparing digital pianos, note that 37 keys is fewer than the standard 88 keys found on home instruments, making this unit better for production than for classical practice.
Key Action: Synth-action mini-keys
The keys use a synth-action mechanism with a mini-key size. This design prioritizes speed and portability over the weighted feel of acoustic pianos. You will find these keys lighter to press, which suits electronic music styles like hip-hop or techno. The smaller width allows for wider hand spans on the same physical space. If you prefer heavy, weighted resistance for realistic piano training, this action type may feel too light and short for your needs.
Connectivity: USB MIDI
This device connects to your computer or tablet via a standard USB cable for MIDI data transfer. You do not need an external power adapter, as the unit draws power directly from the USB port. This simplifies your setup by reducing cable clutter. When shopping, verify that your computer has an available USB port. Unlike wireless controllers, this wired connection ensures stable latency and consistent performance during your production sessions.
Weight: 4.81 pounds
The unit weighs 4.81 pounds, making it relatively light for transport. You can easily move it between rooms or pack it into a bag for on-the-go creation. This low weight is a significant advantage for mobile producers or students who need to carry gear to class. Compare this to heavier stage pianos that require sturdy stands. Keep in mind that this lightness comes with a smaller, less substantial build compared to permanent home studio instruments.
Design and Build Specs
According to the listing, this unit measures 21.9 inches wide, 9.88 inches long, and 3.11 inches high. The color scheme is black with orange accents. You get a compact footprint that fits easily on smaller desks or production stations. The weight is 4.81 pounds. This makes it light enough to move between setups without strain. The synth-action mini-keys provide a familiar feel for playing melodies and basslines. You do not get full-size weighted keys, so this is not for piano-style performance.
The layout includes sixteen velocity-sensitive pads for step sequencing and finger drumming. You can use these for creating beats in Channel Rack or with FPC, Slicex, or Fruity Slicer. Eight knobs sit above the keys for mixing. You can fine-tune levels, sweep filters, and dial in effects directly. There is no display mentioned in the data. You rely on your software interface for visual feedback. The connectivity is USB MIDI only. You do not need external power. This simplicity supports portability. You can plug it into your computer and start creating right away. The build focuses on essential controls for music production.
Setup And Daily Use Guide
Setting up the Novation FLkey 2 37 USB is straightforward because the device relies entirely on USB MIDI connectivity. You connect the unit to your computer using a standard USB cable. The listing indicates that no external power supply is required, which simplifies your desk setup and reduces cable clutter. This plug-and-play approach allows you to start creating immediately after connecting the hardware.
In daily use, the controller is designed specifically for FL Studio. The thirty-seven synth-action mini-keys provide a compact layout for playing basslines and melodies. You can use the pitch and modulation touch strips to add expression to your performances. The sixteen velocity-sensitive pads are intended for step sequencing in the Channel Rack or for finger drumming with tools like FPC, Slicex, or Fruity Slicer. These pads allow you to lay down beats quickly without needing a mouse.
The eight knobs map directly to your mix parameters, letting you fine-tune levels, sweep filters, and dial in effects in real time. Built-in Scale and Chord modes help you lay down chord progressions and patterns without relying on external chord packs. A powerful arpeggiator is also included to assist with melody creation. The package includes six months of FL Studio Producer Edition, along with Novation Play and partner instruments, ensuring you have the necessary software to utilize the hardware features from day one.
Before You Buy This Controller
You need a computer or tablet to use this device. It connects via USB MIDI and draws power from the port. No external adapter is required. Check your software compatibility first. The listing highlights integration with FL Studio. You get six months of the Producer Edition included. If you use other digital audio workstations, verify mapping support. The synth-action mini-keys are not weighted. They suit sketching and sequencing more than piano performance. Keep the surface clean. Dust can accumulate between the mini-keys and pads. Use a soft, dry cloth. This unit fits alongside larger 61-key or 88-key options in the catalog. It is best for portable setups or secondary stations. If you need weighted keys for classical technique, look elsewhere. This is a production tool, not a stage piano.
